Cannon Road
Legendary Climbs
The Strada dei Cannoni (Cannon Road) is an ancient military road that runs along the ridge dividing the Varaita and Maira valleys. Built as a military infrastructure in the first half of the 18th century by order of Charles Emmanuel III, Duke of Savoy, it has been developed into an extraordinary cycling route since 2025: wild, scenic, and ideal for gravel or alpine mountain biking enthusiasts.
Along the route, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Maritime and Cottian Alps, culminating at the Colle di Sampeyre. The average gradient is moderate, featuring a hillside route with long flowing sections and others with steeper gradients, but don’t be fooled by this: there are some very steep sections that require some training.
